Brimstone on Mars

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to demonstrate that sulphur in martian rocks once resided in the atmosphere. This research involved separating both oxidized and reduced sulphur from SNC meteorites, which are believed to be igneous rocks from Mars, and analyzing the isotopic composition. It was found that sulphur isotopes have been fractionated independently of their masses. Laboratory experiments to quantify the isotopic impact of gas-phase reactions on the main sulphur species believed to be present in the martian atmosphere suggest that the martian sulphur cycle includes movement of sulphur from the atmosphere back into surface materials.

A geochemical model for the formation of hydrothermal carbonates on Mars

Article Abstract:

Hydrothermal carbonates may be the explanation for the missing carbon dioxide and water in Mars' atmosphere. A martian geochemical model, based on the hydrothermal system in Iceland, indicates an igneous activity-based hydrothermal system that could have sequestered at least one bar worth of carbonate minerals in the absence of a hydrologic cycle on the surface. This model could also lead to explorations of organic compound synthesis on Mars and so possible life form development.

Geochemical evidence for magmatic water within Mars from pyroxenes in the Shergotty meterorite

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the chemical analyses of the pyroxenes within the Shergotty meteorite to determine the water content of pre-eruptive magma on the planet Mars. The deliverance of water to the planet's surface is discussed.
