Brushtail possum mortality and ambient temperatures following aerial poisoning using 1080

Article Abstract:

Research describing the control of brushtailed possums in New Zealand by use of poisoned cereal bait is presented. It is shown that cold temperatures contributed to high kill rates.

Nonlinearity and seasonal bias in an index of brushtail possum abundance

Article Abstract:

One forest and one farmland area in the North Island, New Zealand are studied to address the concerns that trap catch index (TCI) estimates might not be readily comparable due to seasonal changes in the capture probability of possums. Results support the continued use of TCI for monitoring the abundance of possums in New Zealand.

Lithium and cyanide-induced conditioned food aversions in brushtail possums

Article Abstract:

The relative effectiveness of sodium cyanide (NaCN) and lithium chloride (LiCl) in establishing conditioned food aversion (CFA) among common brushtail possum was examined to decrease their bait shyness. Twenty-seven individually caged wild possums were given raspberry-flavored food. Within 74 minutes of feeding, they were given injections of sodium chloride, LiCl, or NaCN. After the first injection, possums reduced their intake of flavored food. These findings show that CFA can be induced among brushtail possum with both LiCl and NaCN.
