Brussels inquiry criticizes BSE secrecy

Article Abstract:

The inquiry into the causes of the mad cow cases by the European Parliament criticizes the way bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was managed by the European Union. European Commission failed to monitor the enforcement of BSE control measures by the member states. The Commission has also been criticized for the secrecy in the decision making process. The inquiry may recommend that the management of animal and public health should be covered under the consumer protection. The inquiry has found evidence of deliberate cover-up. The economic interests got priority over the public health.

Venter's Drosophila 'success' set to boost human genome efforts

Article Abstract:

Craig Venter, chief of Celera Genomics Systems, which completed the sequencing of the Drosophila melanogaster, aims to sequence the whole human genome by the year 2001 by means of a whole-genome shotgun strategy. It is likely that conventional maps from the Human Genome Project will be combined with the shotgun strategy for the sequencing of the human genome.
