Budget axe threatens social science directorates at NSF

Article Abstract:

There is a good possibility that the social, behavioral and economic sciences (SBES) directorate of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) will be closed following a House of Representatives Science Committee's (HRSC) instruction to cut down the number of directorates from seven to six due to a resource crunch. The directorate has been providing 60% of all US federal support for research in the social sciences in US universities. However, according to Robert Walker, Chairman of the HRSC, social science will continue to receive support from NSF but will have to compete with hard sciences for the funds.

NSF does well, NIH does not in Clinton's 1994 budget

Article Abstract:

US Pres Bill Clinton proposed budget for FY 1994 shows an increase of 7.3% in the allotment for the National Science Foundation (NSF), giving it a budget of $3.18 billion. On the other hand, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will only receive $10.67 million, reflecting an increase of only 3.3%. The Congress is expected to approve the proposed budget, which will mark the second year in a row in which the NIH budget has failed to keep up with inflation. The proposed budget reflects the Clinton Administration's low regard for the role of biomedical research in technological progress.

NSF urged to raise environmental efforts..

Article Abstract:

The US National Science Foundation (NSF) should raise its annual spend on environmental research to $1.6 billion in five years's time, according to an interim report approved by the governing body, the National Science Board. (NSB). The report rejects the idea of a separate National Institute for the Environment, preferring a high-visibility, NSF-wide organizational focal point for environmental research.
