South African scientists urged to propose projects for future support

Article Abstract:

South African Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) director Bernie Faranoff has urged South African scientists to propose projects to help the country in developing its science and technology investment program. Government spending on research and development (R&D) in next year's budget would be determined by the RDP office in line with the plan's goals, along with budgets for all government departments. At present, out of a total current R&D expenditure of R1,645 million, slightly more than 50% is distributed among the seven research councils.

Panel criticizes South African advisory councils, priorities

Article Abstract:

A panel organized by the International Development Research Centre of Canada visited South Africa upon the request of the African National Congress to review government funding of science. The panel found that South Africa spends too much on nuclear energy and high-energy physics. In addition, criticism was also directed against the National Accelerator Centre, the Atomic Energy Corporation and the Human Sciences Research Council. The panel recommended a thorough review of the government's policies in military and space research.

African National Congress drafts blueprint for South African science

Article Abstract:

The African National Congress (ANC) has enunciated the science and technology policy that it hopes will spread the benefits of these fields to all South Africans rather than just to the whites as under apartheid. The policy emphasizes education as requisite for fostering a scientifically and technologically knowledgeable population. ANC also advocates the rise of native South African technologies, stresses research that will produce marketable products and insists on affirmative action programs.
