Bursts make new waves

Article Abstract:

A meeting on the topic of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), held in Alabama in Sep, 1997, was given a new insight into how such bursts occur. It was hypothesized that GRBs could be linked to the cataclysmic end of massive stars and that their rate is proportional to the star's formation rate. However, sceptics at the meeting pointed out that from observations of seven GRBs there seems to be no obvious relationship between their intensity and the intensity of afterglows.
