Ca2+/S100 regulation of giant protein kinases

Article Abstract:

Ca2+/S100A1(sub 2) is a Ca2+ -binding protein that activates the myosin-associated giant protein kinase twitchin with a high specificity. The S100A1(sub 2)-binding region of twitchin is present in the autoregulatory sequence that is involved in the intrasteric autoinhibition of twitchin. The activation of twitchin is Ca2+ dependent and increases in the presence of low amounts of Zn2+. S100A1(sub 2) is a possible activator of the entire family of giant protein kinases that participate in muscle contraction and cytoskeletal structure.

Structure of IRF-1 with bound DNA reveals determinants fo interferon regulation

Article Abstract:

Interferon regulatory factor (IRF) transcription factors are important in control of interferons responding to infection by virus. They are characterized by a triptophan cluster DNA-binding region. The crystal structure of the IRF-1 region bound to the positive regulatory domain I (PRD I) DNA from the interferon-beta promoter is reported. The occurence of GAAA repeats within IRF responses elements are suggested.

Regulation of flowering time by light quality

Article Abstract:

The factors that regulate the transition to flowering in plants are mentioned. The result of the change in the light quality received by plants, leading to a series of responses known as 'shade-avoidance syndrome' is discussed.
