Caiman: Celebrating a comeback in the pantanal

Article Abstract:

The CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) treaty of 1973, agreed to by 80 countries and a worldwide drop in the prices of crocodilian skins helped to discourage poaching. An army of guards, aided by local cattle ranchers and the ranch cowboys called Pantaneiros, was needed to combat the caiman poachers in South America's Pantanal, which is inhabited by more than 3.5 million crocodiles.
