Call for reform of scientific panels

Article Abstract:

The European Union's agricultural commissioner feels that independent organizations should manage the scientific committees which give advice to governments. Scientific committees have failed to prevent the mad cow disease crisis. The public should have confidence in the decisions of the scientific advisory system. These committees should be independent of lobby groups and member states. Political decisions should be based on good scientific advice so that they are approved by European Court of Justice and World Trade Organization.

Biology versus physics?

Article Abstract:

Biology tends to dominate public perceptions of science, while significant developments in physics and chemistry remain relatively unnoticed. In the US and Europe in particular, there is a danger that poor understanding of physics will lead to popular opinion turning against it. Politicians should be aware of the importance of efforts to bring together industrial and scientific perspectives, especially as latest developments in physics and chemistry could have significant repercussions for industry.
