In defence of the Department of Energy

Article Abstract:

There are concerns about the management of the planned Spallation Neutron Source project at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, during its initial stages. The Department of Energy is taking the necessary steps to resolve the problems, but James Sensenbrenner, chair of the Science Committee in the House of Representatives is attempting to block funds for the project. The criticism of the Department of Energy is not just confined to building scientific facilities, there are concerns about nuclear weapons laboratory security.

Problems with stockpile stewardship

Article Abstract:

The Dept of Energy (DOE) has proposed the implementation of the Stockpile Stewardship Program, a program that provides warhead modification and remanufacture. This is to address the problem of maintaining competence and reliability of nuclear weapons stockpile. The program also includes three new experimental weapons design laboratories and three-dimensional computer simulations which will help enhance nuclear weapons design, evaluate the status of the stockpile and reduce the quantity of tests to predict the explosive yield.

Rethinking on weapons clean-up

Article Abstract:

The US effort to clean up former nuclear weapons production plants has enjoyed only limited success, in large part due to the Dept. of Energy's (DOE) mismanagement. Many experts believe that the DOE should cut overhead costs at its laboratories and increase funding for research work at universities. It should also assess the risks posed by different hazards on each site and give priority to the most severe cases instead of insisting on simultaneous remediation action on all fronts.
