Carbon sheet solutions

Article Abstract:

Single layers of graphite, also known as graphene sheets, which have excellent electrical properties, and are cheap to make with no requirement of helicity control, find use in large-scale industrial applications where the conductivity of carbon fibers is insufficient and where carbon nanotubes would be very expensive. Graphene composites, made from graphene sheets embedded in a polymer matrix, need to be examined for their mechanical properties in comparison with nanotube-based materials.

Semiconducting superlattices templated by molecular assemblies

Article Abstract:

Nanostructured composites are a rich source of new materials for technology. The growth of stable semiconductor-organic superlattices based on cadmium sulphide and cadmium selenide is described. A liquid-crystalline phase created from non-ionic organic amphiphiles was used as template for the structures. Precipitation of the organic-inorganic solid occurs within the mesophase. The symmetry and long-range order of the liquid crystal are preserved.

Structural diversity in binary nanoparticle superlattices

Article Abstract:

The assembly of nanoparticles of two different materials into a binary nanoparticle superlattice (BNSL) provides a general and inexpensive path to a large variety of materials with precisely controlled chemical composition and tight placement of the components. It is demonstrated that electrical charges on sterically stabilized nanoparticles determine BNSL stoichiometry.
