The European Union aims to have a centralized scientific organization, but it suffers from brain-drain to the United States, especially in technology areas. Compares US and European universities in terms of recruitment and research; philanthropy; and government's role in directing research. Includes graphs of R&D spending as a percent of GDP and researchers per thousand labor force by European country.

Alpine thaw breaks ice over permafrost's role

Article Abstract:

The author discusses the studies carried out in the effort to understand the cause of long-term climatic changes in Europe. They suggest that the reason maybe the accelerating thawing in the upper permafrost layer, and that the permafrost melting can release carbon into the atmosphere as an organic material it contains is broken by bacteria.
