Tissue repair and stem cell renewal in carcinogenesis

Article Abstract:

The relationship between the normal roles of Hedgehog (Hh) and Wnt signaling pathways in pattern maintenance and on their pathological roles in the initiation and growth of malignant tumors are discussed. Using these pathways as central points of reference, developments in the area of cancer stem cells and the relationship of cancer stem cells to tissue stem cells are reviewed.

It's the ecology, stupid!

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to determine whether the understanding of adult stem cells interaction with their microenvironments will be useful for unlocking their therapeutic potential. Biologists need to know how stem cells and their neighbors depend on one another for survival, to find the optimal conditions for stimulating stem cells therapeutically.

Developmental predisposition to cancer

Article Abstract:

Biologists propose that predisposition to cancer begins in early development, with the seeding of mutated stem cells in epithelial tissues. The article includes the mathematical model by which this conclusion is reached.
