Time for an Italian renaissance?

Article Abstract:

Italy's leading science academy, Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, now 400 years old, is facing the challenge of reinventing itself for modern times. Its aging membership, lack of trust in governing bodies, and lack of willingness to promote itself to the public are seen as major problems. It is hoped that this year's celebrations will raise its profile and that organizational and membership policy changes will help make it ia more relevant institution.

Getting schooled

Article Abstract:

Carol Thornber, a marine ecologist realized that teaching undergraduate courses, with all its preparation and in-class time, takes up more of a young lab head's time than anything else except research duties. For this purpose investigators are relying on mentors and scientific societies for resources and developing new strategies in terms of organizing materials and starting small.
