Article Abstract:

The Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology of the National University in Singapore, established and directed by Tan Yin Hwee, aims to strengthen and develop research work in molecular biology in the Asian region. The Institute has twelve divisions with one head and has 200 scientists with many postdoctorate fellows. Evaluation of the scientists is done by the Scientific Advisory Board with one external expert every alternative year. The Institute is one indicator of Singapore's long range view concerning science but many workers are imported because the locals do not want to be involved.

Article Abstract:

The appointment of Philip Campbell as the new editor of 'Nature' is expected to bring more success to the journal, which has been presenting scientific research that is of interest to scientists, the government and the public for more than 30 years. 'Nature' will continue to perform its role in publishingintelligent and illuminating research and criticizing the scientific community's attitudes toward science and technology. It will also continue to uphold its publishing principles, such as peer review and the confidentiality of authors.
