Change at the Karolinska

Article Abstract:

The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden has reduced its departments from over 100 to fewer than three dozen to make its organization more rational. The reorganization will also force researchers to compete for funds with investigators from other institutions. One such competitor is the new Center for Biotechnology at Huddinge, south of Stockholm. Though the Centre has received vigorous support from the Stockholm City Council, the Karolinska enjoys the prestige of nominating Nobel prize recipients in medicine and physiology.

No biotechnology bandwagon

Article Abstract:

The Finnish academic community has enjoyed great successes in biotechnology research, but venture capital for exploiting those successes has not been forthcoming from Finnish industry. Though four biotechnology centers have been established at universities with funds provided by the Ministry of Education, new Ph.Ds are without jobs. Industry is concentrating its research and development efforts on technologies that can be applied quickly, as dictated by business interests.

Sweden: the times are a-changing

Article Abstract:

Private and public funding of research and development in Sweden dropped from 3.04% of gross national product in 1987 to 2.54% in 1991. Direct public funding of university research has fallen out of favor as the new government attempts to reduce public expenditures and foster alliances between industry and the universities to produce market-driven research. The Swedish government will also try to double the number of technical Ph.Ds awarded by the end of the century.
