Chaotic dynamics of falling disks

Article Abstract:

Motion studies of flat bodies falling in viscous medium is relevant to meterology, sedimentology, chemcal and aerospace engineering problems. The role played by deterministic chaos has recently been emphasized. A study into the dynamics of disks falling in water/glycerol mixtures found four distinct types of motion. These were reduced to one-dimensional maps, displaying a discontinuity, which led to an unusual intermittency transition.

Observing brownian motion in vibration-fluidized granular matter

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that the vibro-fluidized granular matter exhibits characteristics of a 'thermal' bath in a fluctuation-dissipation relationship. Results show that the vibrio-fluidized granular medium displays continuous injection and dissipation of energy, in which the immersed oscillator behaves like an elastically bound brownian particle.

The jamming route to the glass state in weakly perturbed granular media

Article Abstract:

Jamming is described as a framework which is helpful for understanding processes in the transformation to different states, with glass as one example.
