Transgenic plants on trial

Article Abstract:

A landmark new ecological study reveals no invasiveness in a genetically modified rapeseed plant. The study is important for its scope and timeliness, not for proving a great deal about deregulated biotechnology. It is the first truly scientific study of a field that has generated great hyperbole, disingenuousness and anecdotal evidence. It shows that ecology can play a fundamental role in other sciences. And most of all, it clears the air.

Diversity and sustainability on the prairie

Article Abstract:

Experiments indicate that biodiversity enhances the productivity and sustainability of North American prairies. An analysis of 24 species of these prairies with 20 replicates reveals that diverse plots efficiently utilize and retain nutrients. The use of more than ten species causes no significant differences in results. Scientists are keen to utilize modern experimental approaches to analyze the importance of biodiversity.

Connecting landscape patterns to ecosystem and population processes

Article Abstract:

The variations in landscape pattern are used for constructing a model to predict the impact of these changes on the future of an ecosystem and the population processes of flora and fauna. The model constructed is explicit and can be updated in case of changes. This model provides new information on the impact of human activities on nature and its functioning.
