Chart toppers: An exhibition explores the diverse ways of putting data on the map

Article Abstract:

The exhibition "Places and Spaces: Mapping Science", which is at the New York Hall of Science until 25 February 2007, contains a selection of early and modern maps that lay out in various ways how historic cultures have charted the configuration of the Earth and the heavens. A remarkable map by the retired French engineer Charles Joseph Minard representing Napoleon's catastrophic invasion of Russia is showcased, which is both a vivid graphic and a tool for analysis.

Mendeleev's matrix: Dmitri Mendeleev's periodic table permitted him to systematize crucial chemical data

Article Abstract:

Dmitri Mendeleev's periodic table of the elements of 1869 emerged from international attempts to show that links between atomic weights are governed by general and simple laws. Mendeleev's Faraday Lecture gave a powerful defence of conceptual structuring as a complement to experimental method. The graphic table can be reworked in several styles, but the rectilinear variety is generally accepted to be the best.

Maintaining Masaccio: new data from the restored 'Trinity' in Florence

Article Abstract:

Staff from the conservation workshop Opifico delle Pietre Dure in Florence, Italy, have been working to reverse the deterioration that has arisen in Masaccio's fresco 'Trinity with the Virgin, St. John, Donors and a Skeleton' at the church of Santa Maria Novella. This work has revealed large amounts of information about the extremely technical optical construction of Masaccio's illusionistic spaces.
