p53 inhibition by the LANA protein of KSHV protects against cell death

Article Abstract:

Research designed to determine whether the latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA) and p53 interact because Kaposi's sacroma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is linked with the transformation of several cell types suggests that the LANA interacts with p53 and represses its transcriptional activity. The ability of p53 to bind to DNA is not affected by LANA, and LANA also does not induce degradation of p53 in a similar way to HPV-16 E6 oncoproteins. The inhibition of p53-mediated apoptosis indicates that LANA could prolong cell survival and sustain KSHV viral persistence.

From rhyme to reason: Advances in the science of human biology have provided a new platform on which to develop increasingly effective treatments of disease in the next century

Article Abstract:

Many of today's diseases are resistant to drug therapy and patterns to develop successful new therapies have moved towards rational approaches helped by advances in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular genetics. Interventional procedures may be needed to administer such therapies, but this could offer more permanent and cost effective solutions. It is likely that new therapies will combine with current approaches to advance the treatment of many diseases.
