Circularly polarized light generated by photoexcitation of luminophores in glassy liquid-crystal films

Article Abstract:

Optical information processing, display and storage can be achieved using linearly or cicularly polarized light. Strongly circularly polarized photoluminescence from the films of glass-forming chiral-nematic liquid crystals have been generated. Light-emitting dopants were embedded and the host material appeared to induce alignment of the luminophores so that almost pure circular polarization in the 400-420 nm wavelength was produced.

Cellulose stacks up

Article Abstract:

The long chains of cellulose are packed laterally into microfibrils of two crystalline forms. Unexpected patterns of bonding that tie the chains together are revealed on comparison of the structures of these two forms.
