Clarity in ion traps

Article Abstract:

Ions kept in a low-energy radiofrequency storage ring can be induced to arrange themselves into novel linear and spiral crystalline structures that may permit significant refinements in high-energy spectroscopy and the design of atomic clocks. H. Walther and colleagues constructed a storage ring resembling the radiofrequency quadrupole ion trap in using electrodes and a laser to control the movement of ions. The new ring may overcome the difficulty of cooling many ions down to the Lambe-Dick regime at which the first-order Doppler broadening of the atom's spectrum is removed.
