Collective dynamics of 'small-world' networks

Article Abstract:

'Small-world' networks may differ from the usual assumptions about connection topology in studies of coupled dynamic systems. The assumption is that the topology tends to be totally random or totally regular, but social, technological and biological networks may often be found mid-way between randomness and regularity. Small-world networks include a collaboration graph portraying links between movie stars. The model helps in understanding how infectious diseases may be transmitted.

It's a small world

Article Abstract:

Steven Strogatz and Duncan Watts have developed the idea of small world networks from games related to the notion of Six Degrees of Separation. The idea is that everybody is related to everyone else world wide, with a chain of a maximum of six interconnections. Watts and Strogatz define path lengths and clustering coefficients as measures in these networks. There are applications for their work in telecommunications and understanding how infectious diseases can spread.
