Colossal magnetoresistance in Cr-based chalcogenide spinels

Article Abstract:

Chromium-based chalcogenide spinels were observed to exhibit colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) behavior even though they do not have a perovskite structure, manganese, oxygen, heterovalency and distortion-inducing ions. Colossal magnetoresistance in manganite perovskites invokes the double-exchange mechanism wherein the magnetic alignment of manganese ions enhanced the charge transport which is then inhibited by lattice distortions.

Zero-point entropy in 'spin ice'

Article Abstract:

The hydrogen atoms in common water ice are highly disordered due to the two inequivalent O-H bond lengths. It was shown by Pauling that the two bond lengths result in a macroscopic degeneracy of possible ground states. The degeneracy can be studied in an analogous system of a magnet with the pyrochlore structure, or 'spin ice', where spin orientation acts in a similar way to that of the hydrogen position in ice Ih. Specific-heat data is presented for such a system, Dy(sub2)Ti(sub2)O(sub7), from which the total spin entropy of 0/67RIn2 is inferred.
