Combining power analysis and population viability analysis to compare traditional and precautionary approaches to conservation of coastal cetaceans

Article Abstract:

Countries are adopting integrated coastal management programs and precautionary management principles for conserving the coastal cetaceans. A comparison of traditional and precautionary approaches to conservation of coastal cetaceans is presented with illustrations on how the precautionary approach can be used to provide a more scientific base to determine the required level of precaution to address management issues in marine systems.

Environmental models of Cetacean abundance: Reducing uncertainty in population trends

Article Abstract:

Generalized additive models (GAMs) offer a flexible, nonlinear framework for developing species-environment models without imposing limitations on the underlying relationships. The problems associated with monitoring long-lived, highly mobile marine species are discussed. The analytical techniques are applicable to other problems involving non-linear patterns and trend analysis.

Vaquita bycatch in Mexico's artisanal gillnet fisheries: driving a small population to extinction

Article Abstract:

Overfishing and fisheries bycatch have serious effects on marine ecosystems. The vaquita is the most endangered marine cetacean. A complete and permanent ban on gillnets is strongly recommended in the upper Gulf of California.
