Complex origins of variation in the sexual behaviour of male Trinidadian guppies, Poecilia reticulata: interactions between social environment, heredity, body size and age

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to examine the differences in the sexual behaviour of male Trinididadian guppies that exist in the same environment with different predators. The results revealed that social environment has a strong influence on male sexual behavior than demographic conditions. Male sexual behavior was also observed to vary with male age, male size and the origin of the female being courted.

Ultraviolet dermal reflexion and mate choice in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata

Article Abstract:

The male guppies reflect UV light from both their structural (purple, green and white) and pigment (orange) color patches and that males differ in the levels of UV light reflected, are discussed. It is suggested that UV reflection does not provide particularly significant information relating to male quality or influence female preference in this population of guppies.

Spectral irradiance and foraging efficiency in the guppy, Poecilia reticulate

Article Abstract:

An examination on the way spectral irradiance influences the behaviors of guppies foraging for live zooplankton prey is presented. Results reveal that guppy foraging efficiency, measured as time taken to consume a given number of prey items, could vary significantly with the spectrum of the ambient light environment.
