Fully collapsed carbon nanotubes

Article Abstract:

Carbon nanotubes suffering complete collapse along their lengths were revealed in a study of the structure of carbon fibers using transmission electron microscopes. A twist was observed in all the collapsed tubes, suggesting it as the probable cause for the collapse. For the given set of conditions, deflated nanotubes were energetically more stable than the inflated tubes. Role of curvature and van der Waals energies in the structure of flattened tubes are discussed.

Broken symmetry and pseudogaps in ropes of carbon nanotubes

Article Abstract:

First-principles calculations can be used to indicate that a broken symmetry of the (10,10) tube created by interactions between tubes in a rope forms a pseudogap of around 0.1 eV at the Fermi level. The pseudogap has a significant impact on many of the basic electronic properties. It was established that the density of states, and therefore properties connected with it, does not depend on the details of the relative orientations of the tubes. The existence of the pseudogap as a result of the broken symmetry in the rope makes the conductivity and other transport properties very different from those of isolated tubes.
