Condition-dependent signalling of genetic variation in stalk-eyed flies

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the condition-dependence of the male eye span sexual ornaments in the stalk-eyed fly, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni, in response to variable food quality. Non-sexual traits also show condition-dependence.

Continual change in mate preferences

Article Abstract:

High variability of sexually preferred traits occur both across and within species due to random genetic drift and different selective pressures on different geographic populations. These variations influence the genetic factors in the evolutionary cycle, causing allopatric species to go out of phase and develop separate sexual phenotypes. The instability of Fisher's runaway process accounts for the perpetual changes in sexual characters, even among closely related species. The influence of a substantial mutation bias on male sexual characters is discussed.

Measurement bias and fluctuating asymmetry estimates

Article Abstract:

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is a popular measurement of developmental instability. It is also useful in assessing the environmental or genetic changes in population quality. Furthermore, FA can provide an accurate signal of individual quality that can be used in mate selection. However, users of fluctuating asymmetry should be cautious because overestimation of FA can easily be committed. This is usually caused by the inaccuracy of measurement devices that aid the use of FA.
