Congress threat to technology transfer

Article Abstract:

A congressional proposal to resolve disputes over patent rights may jeopardize the transfer of scientific technology from the three national laboratories of the US Department of Energy (DoE). The laboratories would have to provide an arbitration process under the new proposal, which could lead to substantial damage awards in patent disputes. University officials believe that the proposal is a politically driven attempt by Time Domain Corporation, a small Alabama company, to gain the rights to a valuable radar technology, micro-impulse radar (MIR) patented by former LIvermore scientist.

Death of molecular biologist stuns San Diego science

Article Abstract:

The murder of a Japanese molecular biologist, Tsunao Saitoh, may have been due to the intense rivalry between biotechnology firms for acquiring patent rights for treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Saitoh has associations with some biotechnology firms. Saitoh was conducting research into Alzheimer's disease at the University of California, San Diego. He was studying a gene expressing a protein that enables beta amyloid to destroy neurons and cause Alzheimer's disease.
