Control of the location of the volcanic front in island arcs by aqueous fluid connectivity in the mantle wedge

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to identify a new explanation for the position of the volcanic front (VF) in island arcs. The coincidence of the release depth of aqueous fluid from downdragged hydrous peridotite and the position of the VF indicates that the location of the VF is determined by the fluid connectivity in the mantle wedge. Partial melting of the mantle-wedge peridotite takes place when the aqueous fluid migrates upwards and into the warmer mantle wedge and the solidus temperature of peridotite under water-saturated conditions is achieved.

Discovery of a moon orbiting the asteroid 45 Eugenia

Article Abstract:

A satellite of the asteroid 45 Eugenia has been discovered using an adaptive optics system on a ground-based telescope. It has a diameter of around 13 km and an orbital period of around 4.7 days. Its estimated bulk density is around 1.2 g cm(super-3), suggested that it may be a rubble pile or composed of low bulk density materials.

Images of Neptune's ring arcs obtained by ground-based telescope

Article Abstract:

Neptune's incomplete narrow rings, or ring arcs, appear to have persisted, possibly through a gravitational resonance effect involving the Galatea satellite. Ground-based observations of the ring arcs were obtained using an adaptive optics system, and suggest that the ring arcs are near, but not within the Galatea resonance.
