Cool gaze at heartless galaxies

Article Abstract:

The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) has been used to study star formation in galaxies. ISO is an infrared astronomy satellite with high spectral resolution, good sensitivity and a wide wavelength range. ISO observations show that ultra-luminous galaxies are sites of rapid star formation and are uncontaminated by the active galactic nucleus. ISO has obtained dust-absorption-free data and has contributed to the study of molecular environment of star-forming regions. Rho Ophiuchi, one of the nearest star-forming regions, about 160 parsecs away, has also been analyzed by ISO.

A magnetic torsional wave near the galactic centre traced by a 'double helix' nebula

Article Abstract:

Observations of an infrared nebula having the morphology of an intertwined double helix about 100 parsecs from the Galaxy's dynamical centre, with its axis oriented perpendicular to the Galactic plane is reported. The direct connection between the circumnuclear disk and the double helix is ambiguous, but the images show a possible meandering channel that needs investigation.

Circular polarimetry reveals helical magnetic fields in the young stellar object HH 135-136

Article Abstract:

The imaging circular polarimetry is employed to demonstrate the presence of helical magnetic fields along the bipolar outflow of the Herbig-Haro (HH) 135-136 young stellar object.
