Corals fail a test of neutrality

Article Abstract:

Neutral theory is one of the most exciting conceptual advances in ecological studies; this theory is used to study the biodiversity or the prediction of species' distributions in various environments. Scientists set out to see whether corals really do show the vast differences in species composition predicted by the demographic randomness in neutral theory but results were opposing to principles of neutral theory so a niche theory was employed to test the biodiversity.

Coral reef diversity refutes the neutral theory of biodiversity

Article Abstract:

A test of neutral-theory predictions with the use of an extensive species-level data set of Indo-Pacific coral communities is described. It is shown that coral assembly differs markedly from neutral model predictions for patterns of community similarity and the relative abundance of species and the results support the spatio-temporal environmental stochasticity as a major driver of diversity patterns on coral reefs.

Coral communities are regionally enriched along an oceanic biodiversity gradient

Article Abstract:

The most diverse coral reefs show that they are affected by biogeographical influences. The significant variations in the richness of coral assemblages across an oceanic biodiversity gradient is studied.
