Costs discourage European patents

Article Abstract:

The results of a survey conducted by the Munich, Germany-based European Patent Office (EPO) showed that small and medium-sized business enterprises are discouraged from applying for patents because of the high administrative fees and translation costs involved when patents are filed via the EPO. The cost of filing for patents is lower in European national patent offices, the US Patent and Trademark Office and the Japanese Patent Office. The survey was commissioned after industry complaints were launched.
