Costs of satellite camera threaten to push Europe out of the picture

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency (ESA) is in a quandary on how to finance an advanced imaging system that is needed for its Rosetta mission. ESA is forced to look for outside sources after Germany and other major member countries refused to finance the equipment. However, ESA believes that the valuable publicity to be afforded by the camera images will also be lost in the process. It is therefore presenting an alternative plan of improving the existing navigational system of the space vehicle in order to produce the needed photographs.

Report urges UK universities to recoup full overhead costs

Article Abstract:

The UK's Advisory Council on Science and Technology (ACOST) has reported on how Britain's universities can improve their financial management of research. The report, entitled 'The Science Base: Research in Universities,' urges the universities to cut back on research, to require sponsors to pay all overhead costs and to limit the use of costly short-term contracts in hiring research workers. The British government will consider ACOST's call for greater government support for university-based research.

Berlin universities mired in budget crisis

Article Abstract:

A $137 million budget cut is being proposed in Berlin's parliament for the overall budget of the city's three universities. This would be achieved by merging some faculties or by reducing the number of students by 15%. Another debate is also being scheduled by Berlin's legislature on the amendments on the universities law which gives the government authority to close faculties against the wishes of the universities.
