Cultural influences on female mate choice: An experimental test in cowbirds, Molothrus ater

Article Abstract:

Studies of brown-headed cowbirds, Molothrus ater, show that social learning and cultural transmission can have an effect on courtship and mating patterns. To test whether culture influences female mate choice, female cowbirds from a South Dakota population were placed with adult cowbirds from the same population or with females of the South Dakota culture and females fo the Indiana culture. Mating preferences for males from their own culture were shown by females, indicating that mat choice in female cowbirds is influenced by cultural background.
