Current normative concepts in conservation

Article Abstract:

The ill-defined terminology of normative concepts in conservation can be organized and interpreted by reference to two new schools of conservation philosophy. Compositionalism uses evolutionary ecology to comprehend nature, and sees humans as separate from nature. Functionalism understands nature through ecosystem ecology and sees humans as part of nature. Compositionalist terms are appropriate to reserves, while functionalist terms refer to areas with human impact.

Normative concepts in conservation biology: Reply to Willers and Hunter

Article Abstract:

A reply to Bill Willers and Malcolm Hunter for their thoughtful comments on 'Current Normative Concepts in Conservation' by Callicott et al. is presented. In sharp contrast to Willers, Hunter seems to applaud the effort of Conservation Biology to envision a unified conservation philosophy in response to the efforts in 2000 to reunite evolutionary and ecosystem ecology after decades of estrangement.
