Czech science fights against flood costs

Article Abstract:

Scientists in the Czech Republic may find that the government has to greatly reduce the amount of money it can allocate to scientific research as it seeks to pay for repairing damage caused by extensive flooding in Jul 1997. Reducing funding for scientific research could have a particularly negative impact on plans to set up a high-power iodide laser. More money has been made available for applied research in the Czech Republic since 1995, but these funds still account for less than 15% of the overall state research budget.

Mobile telephones ring out changes for radioastronomy frequencies

Article Abstract:

European astronomers and Iridium Inc., a satellite company, have agreed to discuss a proposal regarding the sharing of radiofrequencies by astronomers and mobile telephone users. The Committee on Radioastronomy Frequencies has stressed the need for proper functioning of a beacon and changes in the receivers. Similar compromises are necessary from Iridium to prevent interference from signals which affect the radioastronomical frequencies.

Radioastronomers hammer out an agreement on mobile phones

Article Abstract:

Radioastronomers working in the US have agreed to compromise with telecommunications satellite operator Iridium over radio frequency usage. Iridium has a contract with the European Science Foundation that defines usage of deep space frequencies, maintaining zero noise interference on band 1,612 megahertz. Satellites are a constant hazard to the science of radioastronomy.
