Damselfly larvae learn to recognize predators from chemical cues in the predator's diet

Article Abstract:

The responses of damselfly larvae, Enallagma spp., to the predatory northern pike, Esox lucius, depends on diet-associated cues in the pike's diet. Pike-naive damselflies identify and respond to chemical stimuli from pike that have fed on damselflies or the conspecific fathead minnows. They fail to do so for pike that have fed on mealworms. They learn to recognize pikes through diet-related chemical stimuli from a single exposure to the chemical stimuli.

Fin digging and leaf lifting by the convict cichlid, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum: examples of parental food provisioning

Article Abstract:

A study of the convict cichlid, a biparental fish species in Central America, revealed that females indulged in enhanced fin digging and leaf lifting, parental strategies to aid their offspring in feeding. These patterns of parental food provisioning in the fish species increased with brood age.

Aquatic flatworms use chemical cues from injured conspecifics to assess predation risk and to associate risk with novel cues

Article Abstract:

Antipredator response with regard to avoidance behavior, was shown by the free living flatworm Dugesia dorotocephala, to chemical cues from injured conspecifics.
