Reassembly of shattered chromosomes in Deinococcus radiodurans

Article Abstract:

The relevant two-stage DNA repair process which involves an unknown molecular mechanism for fragment reassembly called 'extended synthesis-dependent strand annealing' (ESDSA), followed and completed by crossovers is described. It is found that intermediates require RecA-dependent crossovers to mature into circular chromosomes that comprise double-stranded patchworks of numerous DNA blocks synthesized before radiation.

Enzymes of evolutionary change

Article Abstract:

New reports show how genetic diversification needs to be a continuous process. Tang and colleagues and Bacher Reuven and colleagues suggest that a nucleoprotein filament is not a good substrate for elongation by the DNA polymerase III holoenzyme, and that the RecA filament appears to be the only substrate for the DNA polymerase V mutase.

Fidelity and infidelity

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the fidelity of molecular processes are discussed. Nature puts errors and infidelity to positive effect, allowing continuous adaptation to new environmental circumstances.
