Who benefits from climate forecasts?: The effective and equitable dissemination of climate forecasts is as important and challenging as their accuracy

Article Abstract:

El Nino has widespread and often disastrous effects, but the ability to predict it is limited. Better forecasts may not be the answer, but attention should instead concentrate on how to disseminate forecasts to achieve maximum benefit. The first step would be to study the use and non-use of forecasts in areas affected by El Nino. Peru was severely affected by the 1997-98 El Nino, and forecasts underestimated the magnitude of the event. Also the main medium for information was the Internet, in English, which disadvantaged some groups of fishermen in Peru.

An oblique view of climate

Article Abstract:

The notion that climatic change may influence the rotational dynamics of Earth has been advanced by researchers, with the basic idea involving feedback between the obliquity and oblateness of Earth. They have looked at the rate and direction of obliquity change, seeking a 20-30 degree change in less than 100 million years, and propose that changes may have been due to large ice sheets when continents were closer to the poles.
