Delaminated zeolite precursors as selective acidic catalysts

Article Abstract:

Heterogeneous catalysis is an important process in petroleum refining, and drug and chemical production, with many such catalysts based on aluminosilicates. Among the materials which have attracted particular attention are zeolites because of their advantages over mesoporous and clay structures. A new study seeks to enlarge the pore size of zeolites to provide access for larger molecules. A layered zeolite precursor is delaminated in a similar way to the unbinding of layered clay structures. The resultant aluminosilicate has improved accessibility of the catalytic sites without degrading activity.

Direct measurement of potassium-promoted change in heat of adsorption of CO on Ni(100)

Article Abstract:

A single-crystal adsorption microcalorimeter using pulsed jets of adsorbate and measurement of induced infrared radiation allows direct measurement of the catalytic effect of potassium on the of heat of adsorption of carbon monoxide (CO) on nickel-100. The catalytic effect was found to be large, ranging from a clean-surface value of 124 kilojoules per mole to 310 kilojoules per mole at high potassium coverages. The combined effects of increased ionization of potassium adatoms and stronger CO surface binding accounts for this effect.

High-throughput screening of solid-state catalyst libraries

Article Abstract:

The use of combinatorial synthesis methods has led to the discovery of materials with promising magnetoresistive, luminescent, dielectric and superconducting properties. Catalyst activity is difficult to screen, and a new laser-induced resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization for sensitive and selective screening of a library of solid state catalysts, is reported. The technique could be adapted for the screening of other catalytic reactions and larger libraries.
