Delays at Brookhaven reactor worsen US 'neutron drought.'

Article Abstract:

Scientists believe that the current shortage of neutron beam lines in the US will be made worse by the fact that the High Flux Beam Reactor at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York State will probably not reopen until Oct 1999 at the earliest. US scientists seeking to study the structure of matter will be forced to rely on photons, which are easier to obtain than neutrons. The US is battling to maintain its existing neutron facilities, while Europe is going ahead with plans for a number of upgraded and new facilities.

Bidder for Brookhaven centre bails out

Article Abstract:

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, New York, no longer intends to pursue its bid to manage Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York. The State University of New York is the only other bidder for the contract. The Brookhaven laboratories began to experience serious difficulties when it found a radiation leak in Jan 1997. The Department of Energy was required to set up a competitive bid situation in Jul 1997. With one remaining bidder, this is unlikely to happen.

Brookhaven's heavy ion collider goes live

Article Abstract:

Gold ions were sent around the first ring of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) by physicists at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island. RHIC is the main focal point for the Brookhaven laboratory and nearly 1,000 investigators will study the character of the quark-gluon plasma created when gold ions collide at combined energies of 40 TeV.
