Demographic approach to releasing adults versus young reintroductions

Article Abstract:

A demographic model that predicts the relative efficiency of releasing juveniles or adults for a given life cycle is developed and applied to the case of reintroduction of Griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) in southern France. The study shows that for Griffon vultures, it is more efficient to release adults than juveniles, despite the observed reduction of demographic parameters following the release.

Variation among individuals, demographic stochasticity, and extinction: response to Kendall and Fox

Article Abstract:

Research analyzes the influence of unstructured variation in survival and fecundity among individuals, its possible deleterious effects, and its interacion with population growth rate. Results reveal that variance increase among individuals has no effect on extinction risk. However, variation in the fecundity slightly decreases extinction risk.

Releasing Adults versus Young in Reintroductions: Interactions between Demography and Genetics

Article Abstract:

Griffon vulture reintroduction in southern France is used to illustrate age-dependent species survivability. Findings show greater introduction success with the release of adults rather than juveniles.
