Denning ecology of black bears in the White River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas

Article Abstract:

Researchers investigated the denning behavior of black bears in the White River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas. This area is populated by about 400 bears and researchers monitored 23 of these over two years from 1993. The study confirmed previous research findings that black bears in the south den for a shorter time than those in northern habitats, and that pregnant females den for longer periods. The average denning period was 93 days, commencing between Jan 1 and Feb 20. The bears chose elevated cavities in trees for their dens, 78% of these being in overcup oak.

A spatially explicit model, derived from demographic variables, to predict attitudes toward black bear restoration

Article Abstract:

The success of any restoration project depends upon the attitudes of individuals and the type of restoration project being conducted. In order to calculate and use an explicit model of human attitudes that are based on the demographic variables in selecting restoration sites, an example of the black bear restoration project is used.
