Differences in begging behaviour between barn swallow, Hirundo rustica, nestlings

Article Abstract:

The brood sizes of barn swallows were modified to produce variations in nestling growth rate and body condition. Begging behavior was determined by removing nestlings from the nest for three laboratory tests in which temporal variations in hunger were regulated and four target nestlings were tested at the same time. Results showed that small nestlings and nestlings from large broods had lower growth rates and poorer body condition than large nestlings and nestlings from small broods. Begging was positively correlated with both short- and long-term determinants of need.

Song correlates with social context, testosterone and body condition in male barn swallows

Article Abstract:

The relationship between male vocal patterns, testosterone level, body condition and social context was analyzed in a number of actively breeding barn swallows during the pre-laying and laying period of their mates. Analysis of song rate and structure in male barn swallows indicated the absence of correlation between singing rate, body condition and absolute plasma testosterone levels. Furthermore, female barn swallows use song as a way to determine male fitness and the quality of song output reflected aspects of male competitive potential.

Sex differences in begging vocalizations of nesting barn swallows, Hirundo rustica

Article Abstract:

Sex differences in offspring begging calls that may serve as a cue for parents to discriminate between sons and daughters are analyzed. No sex related differences were noticed, but sex differences of 86% were noticed at 16 days age.
