Modelling mating success of saproxylic beetles in relation to search behaviour, population density and substrate abundance

Article Abstract:

The efficiency of two mate-finding strategies exploited by representatives of the beetle families Cisidae and Anobiidae that live inside fruiting bodies of wood-decaying fungi is compared. Findings indicate that species adopting the nonpheromone strategy are more sensitive to habitat fragmentation and is expected to decline and go extinct at low population densities.

No material benefits, and a fertilization cost, for multiple mating by female leaf beetles

Article Abstract:

The possible benefits for multiple mating by female leaf beetles, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, both with multiple males and multiple times with the same male are examined. The results suggest that female leaf beetles do not receive any material benefit for multiple mating but may have to pay a cost for this behavior in the form of reduced hatch rate.
