Quantifying the interaction between food density and habitat structure in determining patch selection

Article Abstract:

The foraging site selection by chaffinches, Fringilla coelebs, between a safe patch with short stubble allowing earlier detection of an approaching predator and a risky patch with longer, more visually obstructive stubble is investigated. Results indicate that compensation through vigilance for the increased predation risk manifest in a patch's physical characteristics may greatly reduce the profitability of a patch.

Does an opportunistic predator preferentially attack nonvigilant prey?

Article Abstract:

The stalking predators increase their chance of attack success by preferentially targeting nonvigilant individuals, potentially making relative vigilance rates in an group relatively important in determining predation compared with dilution effect. The results suggest that opportunistic predators do not select prey in small groups on the basis of a vigilant or feeding posture alon

Prey palatability influences predator learning and memory

Article Abstract:

Impact of palatability of prey on the memory and prey defense learning is discussed. Gallus gallus domesticus (chicks) is used as simulation predators to study the same.
