Prey attraction as a possible function of discoid stabilimenta of juvenile orb-spinning spiders

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to investigate whether the discoid stabilimenta spun by juvenile Argiope versicolor, an orb-spinning spider, function to attract prey. After measuring the UV reflectance of the web silks of A. versicolor juveniles, it was found that the discoid stabilimentum silk reflected UV light but not spiral silk or radial silk or the joint where the two types of silk met.

Foraging in agricultural fields: local 'sit-and-move' strategy scales up to risk-averse habitat use in a wolf spider

Article Abstract:

The fine-scale foraging movements scale up to medium-scale habitat that are used by spiders is explored by the field observation on the movement pattern of agrobiont wolf spider 'Pardosa agrestis'. An analysis of the observation indicates that fine-scale movement spiders follow a 'sit-and-move' foraging strategy and movement became less directional with increasing scale.

Costs increase as ritualized fighting progresses within and between phases in the sierra dome spider, Neriene litigiosa

Article Abstract:

Energetic costs of male-male combat in terms of mean and maximum metabolic rates and the rate of increase in energy expenditure are estimated by using the CO2 respirometry. The energetic consequences of age and body mass are investigated and fighting metabolism is compared to metabolism during courtship.
