Replicating success

Article Abstract:

Polymerized Chain Reaction (PCR) by itself and in combination with other techniques has found a wide range of applications, which include sequence detection and isolation for research, forensics and species identification. The new high-throughput 7900HT fast real-time PCR system from Applied Biosystems in Foster City, California, takes 96- and 384-well plates and runs a full set of amplification cycles in about 35 minutes.

Ion channels and stem cells

Article Abstract:

Ion channels and stem cells are the focus of interest in both cell biology and drug discovery where Ion channels act as electrical gatekeepers in cell membranes and are responsible for the generation and propagation of nerve impulses, muscle contraction and many other biological processes. The interest in detecting and measuring the activity of 400 ion-channel genes in the human genome is increasing.

To affinity and beyond

Article Abstract:

Antibodies are used in many fields like in diagnostic tests, to purify proteins and as workhorses of cell biology to detect, locate and identify cellular proteins. Due to the increasing demands antibodies are being cut down to size, tweaked into new shapes, and manufactured in entirely new ways.
