Diploma planned to revive science in UK schools

Article Abstract:

The UK government has decided to introduce a diploma at the secondary level in schools, and review the science and mathematics courses in order to strengthen the academic and vocational qualifications. Vocational courses will become rigorous with the introduction of external assessment. The Advanced General National Vocational Qualification will be renamed Applied A-level. The course will combine academic and vocational courses to check the high drop-out rate. The move has been welcomed by the industry, and the educational and the scientific community.

UN biodiversity advisers warned: stick to science

Article Abstract:

The chairman of a subsidiary body of scientific advisors to the UN biodiversity convention has warned its members to confine their advice to scientific issues. The warning comes in light of the evidence that some members of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological advice are misusing their power to serve political interests. The members should avoid getting involved in the politics of biodiversity, and urged to improve cooperation with the scientific community.

Planned US nuclear repository 'at risk'..

Article Abstract:

The US Department of Energy (DoE) is to investigate claims that its proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, experienced an inflow of warm underground fluids in the past. Calcite samples will be collected, analyzed and dated. Water would corrode metal containers used to store waste, causing leakage and contamination of the environment. The DoE was due to present its design for the repositary along with costs estimates to Congress.
